Bareback riders recorded most of the high scores during the opening round of the PRS Resistol Invitational in Mesquite, Texas. Former bareback world champion rider Kelly Timberman of Mills, Wyoming, led the way with an 83 aboard Smith Pro Rodeo's Memphis King.

Four-time world bareback champion Marvin Garrett was inducted into the Wyoming Sports Hall of Fame with the class of 2009. Garrett grew up on a ranch in Aladdin in northeast Wyoming, and his rodeo career began at age 12.
